Cedar Rapids Community School District complies with standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for asbestos, lead, and radon.
As required by the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act, a copy of the Asbestos Management Plan for each school building is available for review in each respective facility. A complete set of management plans is available for review in the Educational Leadership and Support Center.
The Safe Drinking Water Act requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to determine the level of contaminants in drinking water at which no adverse health effects are likely to occur with an adequate margin of safety. The threshold for when corrective actions are required is established as 15 parts per billion (ppb). This level is consistent with the USEPA Lead and Copper Rule
To ensure drinking water meets the EPA recommendation for lead, CRCSD has adopted a testing schedule to identify potential problem areas that will allow any high levels of lead in the drinking water to be corrected.
The health and well-being of our students and faculty is our highest priority. Together, Linn County Public Health Department and CRCSD have created a program to test radon in all facilities on a four-year rotation.
According to the EPA, the national action level for radon mitigation is 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). As a guideline set by the EPA, this is the level that CRCSD follows for radon mitigation from a room. Regularly occupied rooms on the first floor of the building are tested, followed by 25% of the remaining occupied rooms on upper levels of the facility.
