To comply with new state legislation (HF 782) and reduce distractions during the school day, students will not be allowed to use personal electronic devices during school hours:

  • Middle & High School: 7:50 AM – 2:50 PM
  • Elementary: 8:50 AM – 3:50 PM
  • In addition, any time a student is receiving breakfast at the school or is in the area where breakfast is being served.

This includes cellular/mobile phones, smart watches and smart glasses while in a receive/transmit mode, earbuds, headphones, gaming devices, portable media players, and similar devices used to send or receive information.
All devices must be:

  • Silenced or turned off
  • Stored out of sight throughout the school day (e.g., in lockers or backpacks).

Exceptions include:

  • Students with a documented legal, medical/health, or safety-related need may request an exemption through a formal petition process with the building principal.
  • Students with device access needs included in an IEP, 504, or health plan may retain access to their personal devices during approved times as outlined in their IEP.
  • Teachers may allow the use of personal devices for specific learning/instructional purposes only, with prior approval from a building administrator.

Contacting Your Child:
Please call your child’s school office if you need to reach them during the school day. In emergencies, staff will contact you as soon as it is safe to do so.

Enforcement Procedures: The following progression of consequences shall be used for policy violations:

  • 1st Offense: The device is taken and held in the school office until the end of the day.
  • 2nd Offense: The device is taken and held in the office, and the parent/guardian is notified. At the end of the day, it will only be returned to the student once the parent/guardian has authorized its release.
  • 3rd Offense: The device is taken and held in the office until the end of the day. The student’s parent/guardian (or approved adult) must pick it up in the school office during normal school hours.
  • 4th & Subsequent Offenses: The school will apply additional consequences aligned with the District’s Discipline Matrix.

Please help support this policy by educating your students at home on these new guidelines. If you have questions about this policy or would like more information, please contact your school office.
