The start of classes will be DELAYED by TWO HOURS tomorrow, Tuesday, February 18th, 2025, because of weather conditions.
There will be no morning half-day Preschool, but full-day preschool at Truman Early Learning Center will be DELAYED by TWO HOURS tomorrow. Thank you.

If an adult can get frostbite after 10 minutes in these conditions, imagine what it'd be like for the kids who have to walk to school or wait for the bus. Cancel school!
The prediction is the literally same it was last time you canceled because of cold.
school should be canceled there is no reason my niece should be walking 2 miles in this cold because you say she doesn’t live far enough away and get your bussing schedule and there’s no one to pick her up.
I'd suggest the people that make these decisions, should be required to walk the distance of one of the longest walkers in the district, in these temperatures. Kids don't ride buses if they live within 2 miles, so they either walk or depend on a car ride. #cancelschool
What is the point? It's going to be just as cold after the 2 hours. Need to cancel kids shouldn't be walking in this weather
I'd suggest a District Closure. Include Maintenance and all else. Dangerously cold, no snow to clear. Walking students. Kids', Secretaries', Maintenance folks matter.
If canceling, Please make the call to cancel soon enough that those kids that walk 30-40m, kids that wait 20m at bus stops have time to stay home and safe. I need three layers+gear to be out there 45-50 minutes and that's with hot packs in boots and mittens. It's my job and I'm happy to do so. However, these kids don't have that typically and no where to keep it all when they get to school even if they do (lockers, if they have them, are not big enough for all that.) actual temps and wind chills are colder at 7:30am than they were at 5am. They're advising not being out until well after 9-10 am. "Dangerous" frostbite in as soon 5-10m. The warning goes until noon. This delay is inconsistent compared to past calls / thresholds.
Cedar Rapids Community School District last night my son told me that one of his friends has to walk to school. I mapped it – 1.7 miles. His friend told him that even with gloves on, his hands HURT by the time he got to school. He also fell multiple times because it's still slick in places. I'd love for all of you to do this. You're nice and warm in your offices while these kids are risking frostbite.
I already plan on keeping my kid home. Everyone else should just do the same!
Needs to cancel. Too many kids walk ☹️
It’s suppose to be 10 below by the time the 2 hour delay ends. That’s without the windchill
I work for Champions & It is too cold for kids to be out
Cedar Rapids Community School District do the right thing and think of those students that have to walk in the extreme cold or those that ride a bus. It is way too cold! Just please cancel school.
It’s absolutely awful that you didn’t cancel for today. More students walk when you delay for 2 hrs because parents typically drop kids off before heading to work. You’ve dropped the ball here. Iowa City canceled. 🤦🏼♀️
Just remember these things when you go to vote in November.
Just cancel it’s to cold me as a mom if it’s to cold me my kids will stay home period ! Kids are sick because half of them gotta stand outside In the morning
School needs to be cancelled. Kids have to walk to school and kids have to walk to the bus… It's below zero this is not safe for kids to be outside with an cold advisory out!!!!
I am lucky that I work remotely, but I feel so badly for those that don't. I understand the safety measures, of course, but I wonder how many jobs have been lost because of the school closures and delays.
Need to cancel its too cold!
Cedar Rapids Community School District cancel school at this point they don't even care about the students we need a new school board that puts students first
Barely any schools closed around us… we will have school after a delay!
Close our district do to cold think about our kids
Why have you not cancelled? So many kids have to walk or wait for buses. I feel like for other times it’s been this cold you’ve cancelled…what’s different now?
Just here for the comments
Remember, if the new middle school is constructed, all of the kids within 2 miles (mostly north of Blairs Ferry Road) would not only have to walk to school, but they woudl have to in all weather conditions while CROSSING BLAIRS FERRY ROAD!!! What could possibly go wrong??? They claim that we will save a bunch on bussing costs, so looking at the map, this statement would be accurate. Vote "Absolutely NO" at the upcoming bond issue. Now, what will we do with $7.5M of worthless land that we are purchasing??

Not another penny!
U better delay school
They tell us that IF a new middle school is constructed to replace Harding, they will tear down Harding and leave it as green space as they do not want to have to sell the property to a competitor. How insane is that? If it was truly about education, I would think that having another option for families would be a benefit. With this attitude, it must not really be about education. Although I would like to believe that there is no chance of this bond issue passing, the attitude that they are showing against allowing parents to choose what is best for thier kids is very unsettling. Just another reason to vote "Absolutely No"
Has the CRCSD officially closed on the property that was to be purchased on Ushers Ferry? If not, what is the closing date?

Thank you all for everything you do for our kids 👏👏 Jess Mae ❤️

Yay Jess!!
We wanted to share some data with you on how we stack up against our neighboring communities throughout Linn County. We also know you’re wondering how the proposed bond plan would affect your taxes. We understand this is an important consideration!
You can see that, a residential property with an assessed value of 100,000 (assessed value is not the same as market value) would experience an estimated increase of approximately $6.68 per month (or approximately $80.10 per year).
An investment in the proposed plan would lead to significant savings, overall, in alignment of our commitment to financial responsibility now and in the years to come.
We listened to your feedback from the survey last spring – thank you! – and we will appreciate your feedback again with this second survey. Please take the survey to share your thoughts by March 5.

Also many more children living in poverty in this district I’d imagine if you looked at those numbers
This data is great! Thank you!
We don't want it
This data may not be flawed, but using it to support this bond issue is nothing short of ludicrous. If your next door neighbor buys a new sports car with a $1000 payment should you go get on also, just because? How about we concentrate in finding waste. Taxes suck, but it sucks worse to see taxpayer money spent frivolously. After the recent $7.5 purchase of 50 acres, it has proven that they have no business holding the purse strings. Remember, public money is only public money after it has been taken from citizens through taxes. I will be voting "Absolutely NO"

The plan for a new middle school on the NE side of Cedar Rapids would alleviate current challenges to serve students and families in the current Harding area. The maps included in this post illustrate that Harding’s current location is surrounded by Linn-Mar.
Additionally, the service area for Harding extends north and east. Harding currently runs 34 buses to support its students and families. This is twice and triple the number of buses that other middle schools have due to its current location. Centralizing the school in its current boundary area, by building in this new location, can only help better serve those students as well as meet the needs of projected growth in that area.

Is this because we are short bus drivers to get kids home issue? Saying it's surrounded by linn mar isn't a reason to turn it to green space. Do boundary lines need readjusted with growing communities? When was last time that was actually really looked into?
I just looked at that map and saying that Harding is "surrounded" by Lin-Mar is a load of crap. Take a look at the map for yourself. The land adjacent to Harding to the north and to the west is Lin-Mar district but there are ZERO residences in that shaded area! Even if there were houses there, they would be on 2 sides, not "surrounded" This is another case twisting the facts to fit thier agenda. With that, amongst other reasons, I will have to vote "Absolutely No"
Ok, how do you expect for students at the proposed school get to school? Walk across Blair’s Ferry at morning rush hour? I am betting that just as many would need to be bussed. Please detail on a map on what students would not need to be bussed to the new school. If this were an argument, the location would be well north of Blair’s Ferry Road instead of along the southern border. In my opinion, bad planning and a bad argument. I could live with other aspects of the bond issue, but this new middle school will absolutely force me to vote no.
Why don't they ever address the schools that already exist that are imndire need of funding? My sons elementary school needs major upgrades but they want to spend money to make a new school? This is exactly why we are moving to another district that has adequate schools for our kids
We don't want it! That's why we voted to fix harding
The proposed changes to Kennedy High School would be an investment in a renovation of the commons area to ensure more efficient food service that can meet the needs of the volume of the Kennedy student population. It would also be an investment in an equitable high school experience that is available for students at Washington and Jefferson, through a program that ensures Freshmen students are equipped and prepared for a smooth academic transition from middle school to high school.

Where is video from the last board meeting?
Many of the comments from the public had to do with the "marginalized" population that has had challenges with school. With this being said, why would we be looking at a $110M middle school in the most affluent district in Cedar Rapids, rather than looking for investment into early childhood education/support focused in the most challenged areas. If we do not help set a pathway to a good education early, by the time middle school comes around, many of these students are already challenged to the point of giving up. The new middle school is misguided for many reasons and City View, from a cost per student perspective, is very, very expensive for taxpayers to support. I do believe that the citizens of Cedar Rapids would vote to invest more into early childhood education than the new school or City View. If it is truly about education and ROI, early childhood education seems to be the best path. Lets vote to support our kids, but the upcoming bond issue is not the right alternative. Vote NO and lets really assess our needs.
An equitable experience for students at Kennedy vs wash and Jeff? There are many inequities between these schools/students but Kennedy is not the one lacking..
The proposed changes to Wilson would be an investment in a historic building; addresses under-enrollment in our middle schools; and would provide modernized facilities for our students with a focus on academic excellence, safety, and security.
Throughout the process, the Bond Task Force made decisions informed by our values of fiscal responsibility, historic preservation, and optimizing operations to enhance educational opportunities for all students.

I feel like I’m in the minority here, but I strongly advocate for a new building rather than trying to renovate outdated designs that no longer meet our students’ needs. As a teacher at Roosevelt, I’m deeply concerned about adding nearly 300 more students to our school when we already struggle to accommodate the 530+ we have. I’m not a core teacher, so I can’t speak for them, but as the Band & Orchestra Director, my class sizes are typically larger than most core classes—or at least they’re supposed to be. However, due to the way the entire building is designed, we’re forced to split classes excessively just to make room. Our Band and Orchestra students are crammed into a space that is far too small, as there is no adequately sized room to accommodate them Aside from Taft and Harding, our middle school buildings are squeezing students into rooms designed for 20–25 desks, bookshelves, and cabinets. That setup might work for core classes, but it’s completely inadequate for band and orchestra programs. Any Band/Orchestra room built in the past 50 years is significantly larger to account for: – Class sizes of 30 to 40+ students (depending on school size) – Storage for students’ instruments (e.g., a 12-year-old hauling a tuba to math on the 4th floor with only a 3-minute passing period) – Large instruments like drums, string basses, cellos, and pianos—each taking up 5–9 feet of space, with 5–10 students using them depending on the school’s size And this doesn’t even address the issue with our middle school auditoriums. At Roosevelt, our stage can barely fit all our 6th-grade band students alongside the necessary equipment. At Taft and Harding, they have to split their concerts into three separate events because there isn’t enough seating. For example, instead of a combined 6th/7th/8th grade Band concert, they must hold three separate “mini” concerts—sometimes even on different days—to avoid conflicts with students involved in multiple activities, which must be a scheduling nightmare for them. Without proper building design, our programs are suffering, and students are losing access to the full experience of music education compared to their peers in surrounding schools. We need real solutions to accommodate all students effectively.
We were led to believe a couple of years ago that these old buildings were pretty much unusable. It is amazing how a short time later we have figured out ways to modernize them that will be allot less expensive than building new, and it will keep neighborhood schools. I am glad to see that it has been figured out. This is a segment of the bond issue that I can support, along with the "trades wings" at the high schools, but the new $100M+ middle school in the most affluent part of town will be facet of it that will force me to vote NO. Lets pare back the bond issue to $50M, take care of some of the pent up modernizations of our buildings and then see where we are at in a few years. It will allow us to see how well these projects are managed while moving forward. If the new proposed middle school will be for "generations to come" we can wait a few more years as we figure out the declining enrollment, private schools, charter schools, etc. I wish that we could vote on 1/2 the projects!
What happened to the plan to close Roosevelt and build a new school at the taft location?
I stand corrected. The "trade wings" at the high schools would not be covered under this bond issue, the funding would come from elsewhere. With that, we can still have our "trade wings" while voting "Absolutely NO"
I don't understand how Harding is surrounded by Lin-Mar. I lived on Cavalier st right behind Harding and that is CRCSD boundaries. I am confused.
Governor Kim Reynolds five public schools more than 2% and I might say yes.

What is the plan for Grant Wood Elementary? I moved into the neighborhood so my kids could walk to school and I hear it is being closed down? Is that the plan?
Hmmm… Cedar Rapids Community School District, we need more details, please. You say “Here, we’ve focused on McKinley,” but you’ve said only two-and-a-half things about McKinley. The next picture says “Why a McKinley Renovation?” but doesn’t answer the question. So, now are we to understand that the NE side middle school will now NOT service Franklin students (many of whom are NE side students) but they will instead attend McK? Please don’t make the same mistakes with this roll out that you made with CaCP. This is beginning to smack of that debacle. There is a lot of vagueness here that doesn’t feel good and we want to be supportive. In order to do that, we need information. From the get-go.
I think this is crazy as u all have already messed with kids and messed up friends ships and now u expect us to move are kids again??? Help me understand how this is gonna make anything better? Wilson used to be a great middle school and elementary and u all took that away and now u wanna take the middle school away? What about the teachers that work there and the principal??? Make it make since come on I would like to talk to who ever is in charge of all of this it sounds messy and crazy!
I'm not convinced that new buildings will solve the problems facing CRSD. We need to invest in our teachers and staff, and work to rebuild trust with parents and the community. My vote is No to the Bond

I need to read this more closely, but does this mean more kids at Roosevelt?!? That is a deteriorating building, if I ever saw one. Let's go ahead and add more kids to an already struggling, overpacked school. That school needs more renovations and updates than Harding.
What would happen with the 4 unused schools/properties? The information in the survey states the old Harding building would be demolished and turned into green space?!? Considering the building was built in the 60's and has a capacity of 900 (per CRCSD data) that doesn't make sense. If the building isn't needed, selling it would be the financially responsible option. There is no information at all listed about the districts plans for the buildings/properties for CRA/Taylor(1973), Grant(1961) and Metro.
Have current or upcoming Wilson middle school families been asked for feedback on this? What's the plan if not approved for Kennedy since part of pathways is a 9th grade area? What's left on the facilities list that was already approved that hasn't been completed? Why are we not done with one project and going to next this is when community starts questioning where all our money is going. You have all these ideas but what our district NEEDS is a central location with a pantry, ELL translators, classes for parents to learn English, resources for families. We have behavior issues starting in Kindergarten. We have brand new buildings not full but class sizes at 27. Families and enrollment is declining/leaving due to the items your choosing to prioritize.
So uprooting kids again and sending them to other schools. All you’re worried about is nice shiny buildings not how it’s going to affect the students going to those schools. Make it make sense
Renovations will not help with the overcrowding at Roosevelt
Metro would be sold !
CRA /Taylor cedar rapids school district doesn't own the land . It's lease land It's main purpose was for education only. .

Not sure the retired home owners can afford another tax increase. I moved 3 times in 10 years to get away from increasing property taxes. I support smaller classroom student populations before building more new schools. Fact.
In my opinion, this bond issue is wrong in many ways, but does have some facets that are positive. The $100M+ building in the most affluent and academically successful district in Cedar Rapids. If it was all about education, would those dollars be better allocated to other areas of town that need more help? Our enrollment is decreasing, and as parents are making other choices for thier kids through charter schools, our public school enrollment will continue to decline. Some districts around the country have seen as much as a 25% decline. Cedar Rapids Prep, a new school being built on 16 acres just blocks from this new proposed school will further diminish enrollment, especially in that district. Should we wait a few years to see that impact before committing to a new school? They also do not mention that the second bond issue planned in a few years will push the total up to a 1/2 a billion dollars. They do not talk much about that. At the last bond issue that talked about how the older buildings coudn't be saved, but now we have figured out a way to use McKinley, Franklin, Roosevelt and Wilson, some of the oldest in the district. It can be done, and it can be done more efficiently than building new buildings. Cedar Rapids should be proud that our property taxes are lower than other communities in Linn County. If your next door neighbor buys a new BMW and has a $1,000 car payment does that mean you should? Would it make you a better driver? The way to make our education better is to make our education better. Support our front line with resources, get serious about early childhood education, and focus on districts that need more help. Lets look at the metrics and gauge successes on data rather than buildings. Our metrics are currently below average in about every way. I do not believe that new buildings will help with that, but better education within the buildings that we have would. With all of that, I would 100% support a bond issue to add a "trades wing" at every high school. Instead of shoving college down everybody's throat, lets get serious about putting out students that can come out of high school with a real career. Lets also attempt to get back to where the front line educators trust the District Administration. Morale is low as "back room" plans are made without adequate input from those that deal with it daily. Yes, I vote to get serious about education, but I feel that has little to do with building a new $100M+ middle school. Unless convinced otherwise, I will be voting "absolutely NO", and hope that others will educate themselves and do the same.
The new bond proposal utilization of McKinley, Franklin, and Wilson is so much better than the prior bond proposal. Less than $7/month per 100K residential seems reasonable.
Will there be signs for yards to purchase? Want to help spread support 💜💜💜
Would you just call school for tomorrow. I will not be sending my children. We live on side street and those are NEVER cleared after this much snow
People that haven't had kids in school for 20 years , living on social security, shouldn't have to pay school tax. I vote no.
You should take some money and fund a survey as to why the enrollment is declining!!! Oh wait, parents are not liking the direction the district is going g and are enrolling in other districts.

In 1969 I met my best friend, while watching our friends rehearsing for a Jefferson play. He had to leave to get ready to sell tickets to a dance…in the cafeteria. I met him again, there. After, talking a bit, he asked me to dance. I found out he was supposed to be grounded, so he’d see me again at school on Monday. He did. That was the beginning of a relationship that went on to marriage in 1972. I joined him then, at ISU, and transferred from my Northwestern Bell job in CR to the same job in Ames. He graduated in 1974 and became a dad shortly after. We moved back to CR. Moved through 5 houses and ended up in an historic district home on the SE side. We raised three kids and supported them through college and families. We are still very much in love in our 70’s.❤️ Being alone together, in the house we love, is a great life.

I don't have a love story per se, but wondering who I talk to about a book concern I have that my 11 year old daughter brought home from school today? It's a graphic book called Heartstopper. The book she brought home is volume 3, which means there are 2 others like it. However, in this one..the two boys end up in a bed together making out and one of the boys ends up with a hickey on his neck and they try to figure out how to hide it.. reminder, it's a picture book. That my 11 year old brought home to read. 11. In middle school. Somehow this is more appropriate than the books you all have banned? I'd hate to know what other books are allowed in your library if they're anything like this one. This is borderline pornography. Again, allowed for my 11 year old to bring home. Let me know who to talk to. Thanks.
🚨 Reminder! 🚨 There will be no school for students tomorrow. Enjoy your day off, and we’ll see you back in class soon! 😊
