As the Cedar Rapids Community School District moves closer to our landmark 2027–2028 school redesign, our priority is ensuring that every family feels supported and informed. To provide maximum flexibility during this transition, we are pleased to announce that the Early School Choice Permit application window is now open.
From April 28 through May 15, families have the opportunity to request a school placement for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year that best fits their student’s needs.
What Does This Mean for Your Family?
Whether you are looking for consistency or a head start on a new environment, here is how the permit process affects you:
- If you want to stay: If your student is happy at their current school and you intend for them to remain there for the 2026–2027 school year, no action is required.
- Already on a permit? No need to reapply!
- If you want to transition: If you would like your student to attend a different school within the district next year, you must complete the Early School Choice Permit application during this window.
Important Application Details
To ensure a smooth processing period for our staff and a fair transition for all schools, please keep the following in mind:
- Individual Applications: A separate permit application must be submitted for each individual student.
- The Deadline: All applications must be received by May 15 to be considered for the early transition period.
Building a Stronger Future Together
These choices are an important step in our broader mission to create stronger, more sustainable school communities. By offering these flexible options now, we aim to make the eventual district-wide redesign in 2027 as seamless as possible for our students and staff alike.
