CRCSD enriches the community and embraces all backgrounds and cultures. We share a learning environment that welcomes everyone, as we prepare all students with pathways and passions for the future.
We’re constantly building an environment and community where our students, staff, and stakeholders can succeed. Take a glimpse at our programs and initiatives.
Cedar Rapids Community School District is home to five magnet schools—three elementaries and two middle schools—which focus on sustainability, STEAM, leadership, and business.
The gifted education and PACT program enhances and supports the educational experience of high ability students to prepare them to become world class learners and responsible citizens.
Career and technical education provides quality programming aligned with workforce needs, developed in partnership with local companies. It engages students in the application of other academic content to help prepare them for the future.
Iowa BIG celebrates the unique partnership between school districts and area businesses, and is an opportunity for high school students to expand their learning outside the traditional classroom for part of the school day.
We are committed to implementing sustainable practices to protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint through facility and grounds improvements, development planning, technology updates, and school green teams.
The district’s new 14-year Comprehensive Facilities Master Plan is a fiscally responsible plan that reimagines our school facilities to help address current realities and future demands.

Because of Mr Terupt by Rob Buyea. Best read aloud for my 5th graders I have found.
‘Recess at 20 Below!’
One of my favorite winter read-aloud books. I read it to so many groups of kids…before I retired.
It’s non-fiction…real photos of kids in Alaska having recess in the winter. So…how cold does it half to be to have indoor recess? It’s not about temperature…it’s if you have a moose on the playground! 🫎
Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel

As we get deeper into the school year, we want to emphasize the importance of regular daily school attendance. When students miss school, they miss important instructional time that can’t be replaced. Absences add up and can put your child at risk of academic failure. Families, help to ensure your student is at school every day! … See MoreSee Less
You should clarify this to make certain families understand that illnesses are still illnesses and kids should stay home in that case. There's a lot of garbage going around that is just viral and doesn't require a doctor just rest and care. Don't guilt parents for keeping a kid home sick when three years ago we were mandated to keep kids home two weeks at a pop for covid (which is one of the things going around now).
Kids are basically teaching themselves since most is on computers and teachers aren't teaching…it's all about testing..even if they weren't taught the stuff
This entire topic makes my heart sink! The GUILT placed on parents to send their sick kids to school is exhausting 😢
If your kid is sick, keep them home. You should not be required to go to a doctor to determine an illness. Viruses make you just as sick and a trip to the doctor with a weakened immune system only leaves you vulnerable for other germs. (Not to mention antibiotics aren’t effective for a virus).
You can communicate with teachers and retrieve missed work, our children have Chromebooks with missed assignments.
There is little to no resources for families that have children with autoimmune deficiencies.
We don’t want our children to miss instruction but we also don’t want what would be a 2-3 day cold linger for 2 weeks (even sent to the ER 🙋🏻♀️)had we given their bodies time to rest and recover.
Let’s talk solutions, I remember when students easily logged on to their Chromebooks with a teacher (Pandemic should have taught us a few things)…why not propose this as a means for emergency use instruction and utilize for both sick days AND snow days? (Kirkwood live streams for “distance” learning and we could too).

Since we have seen our first snowfall of the season, we wanted to remind our families to send their students with the items they need to stay warm. Elementary and preschool students need snow pants, snow boots, and mittens/gloves to play in areas with snow during recess. Students are asked to change out of their boots into a dry pair of shoes when inside the building. Also, students go outside for recess unless the air temperature or windchill is less than 10 degrees. … See MoreSee Less

Metro High School held its annual Metro Turkey Day yesterday. Students and staff prepared all of the food and drinks, made the decorations, and helped to get everything set up. Then, all of the students and staff sat down and enjoyed a delicious meal together. Even more special, this year, Metro is celebrating 50 years. A large group of retired and former Metro staff stopped by to partake in this long-standing tradition. You can check out more photos here: flic.kr/s/aHBqjB4aYj… See MoreSee Less

Thank you Tricia Tumilty Baker for all that you do for your students, all students and staff at Maple Grove Elementary 👏👏👏
They would feel better if they were supported along with the teachers and protected from disrespectful students that don't get any form of consequences. The education profession has gone down a slippery slope and the leader of this circus is a fired superintendent from Nebraska. Doesn't say much.
