Cedar Rapids Community School District provides transportation to eligible students. To understand if your student may be eligible for free or paid bus transportation, read below.
To request transportation for your student, contact your school directly. If your student’s situation changes—such as change in school or address—please review the transportation eligibility requirements as your student’s transportation may be affected.
Eligibility for general education students
Free transportation eligibility
General education students are eligible for free transportation under the following circumstances:
- Kindergarten through eighth grade: A student must live in their school attendance area, and also live greater than or equal to two miles from school
- Ninth through 12th grade: A student must live in their school attendance area, and also live greater than or equal to three miles from school
Paid busing eligibility
Students who are not eligible for free transportation may be eligible to pay for bus transportation.
If my student is within the two or three mile radius, and if CRCSD determines that my student’s walking route is not safe, paid busing may be available. For more information, contact your student’s school.
If my student qualifies for paid busing and qualifies for free and reduced lunch, your paid busing will be free or reduced in cost. This cost reduction is within your free and reduced lunch application. Contact your student’s school with questions.
The state of Iowa gives paid busing rate guidance to CRCSD in late October each year. View the paid busing parent letter here.

Open enrollment students
Permit (within-district transfer) students
Under no circumstances are permit students granted transportation.
Preschool students
Certain qualifications must be met for students that qualify for IEP services in order to be eligible for preschool transportation.
General education preschool 4-year-old students that attend Truman Early Childhood Center are eligible for transportation.
For more information on preschool transportation, contact the Early Learning office at 319-558-2375.
Special education students
In addition to the general education eligibility guidelines, special education students are eligible for free transportation if it is listed in their individualized educational plan (IEP).
Students with mobility devices / wheelchairs
Requirements:
Students may ride district transportation in a wheelchair/mobility device that is able to be secured with a 4 point wheelchair securement system and allows for the use of a 3 point (shoulder harness and seat belt) user restraint.
Wheelchairs should be in good working condition and not damaged, so as not to impede securement as stated above.
